“You were the light I did not know I needed.”

One Sunday when “Madison” was working in a city away from home, a couple walked up to her kiosk at Costco. They had run over a metal shard on their way to church, and while their tire was getting repaired they decided to take care of a phone issue.

During that slow morning at Costco, their conversation moved easily from technical phone questions to Madison’s job, how as a 21-year-old she enjoyed helping customers and training employees for customer service . . . to the stress in her life as she traveled to different cities for a week at a time.

The couple mentioned things they would love to share with her—like a music venue in town, a Bible discussion group on Wednesday evenings, and a Costco pumpkin pie. (And along with checking on their tire and getting lunch, they even bought a pie and shared it with her!) Though the timing of the Bible discussion group wouldn’t immediately work with Madison’s schedule, they exchanged cell phone numbers.

Madison didn’t know about the preparation this couple had through Q Place resources and training. But through the morning she had felt noticed, listened to, and cared for. In fact, later that day, reflecting on the intriguing interaction, Madison texted with them and said, “You were the Light that I did not know I needed in my life!”

In our culture, people often need interactions like this before they sense that something is missing in their life. A Barna Report called Reviving Evangelism (2019) described that reality and provided this takeaway from the data they collected:

When non-Christians have experienced vibrancy, personal care, intelligence, reasonableness and a gentle, non-judgmental approach from Christians, their spiritual curiosity overall and interest in Christianity specifically are elevated.

Yet many Christians feel insecure about having spiritual conversations and will often miss opportunities that God has placed in front of them.
